Copyright Policy Overview

There are often misunderstandings about copyright on the web. The following overview briefly outlines some general rules to follow. This list of rules is by no means comprehensive, however, and should serve only as a starting point for your own research on correct policies and procedures.

  • Code and Scripts

    The code written to create a webpage is not open for free copy and pasting creation. Viewing the source code of a page is one thing, while duplicating its exact structure is another. This applies to CSS documents as well as JavaScript or any other coded files. If you need a template, there are many websites available that will allow you to legally obtain one by following their terms and conditions.

  • Posts and Text

    The general rules of plagiarism apply as much to online content as it does to print. Quotations or references to another author’s work should be properly cited and kept in context. The amount of the work used, along with which parts are used, also need to be carefully considered to avoid infringement.

  • Audio and Video

    Any audio, video, or other multimedia usually requires permission for its use on your website. There are also various rules of how much of the media may be used. The original artist may also require additional terms or conditions on licensing the media.

  • Photographs

    The same rules apply to photographs as with images on the web. Taking you own photos is a common practice. Just because the photos are legally yours, however, does not necessarily mean you can freely publish them on your website. There are a few regulations, such as model release, and other rules that need to be considered.

  • Links and Other Content

    Many websites have terms of use and conditions that outline how the content on their site may be used or linked to. Make sure to review their policies and obtain the needed permissions before using any content off their site.

  • Side Note

    Derivative works are still considered copyright infringement. Caution should be used on obtaining content from other sites; even if they give permission, if the content has been stolen, you will be held responsible for using it.

    • Copyright Policy Adherence

    Complying to copyright policy is something that I take very serious. Not only is infringement illegal, but it is also very disrespectful and unfair to whoever's hard work your swiping.

    My quick and easy solution to keep myself within the guidelines is simple: create your own content.

    Getting ideas and inspiration from other people is a useful resource, but merely replicating it kills creativity right in its tracks. As I adapt and build upon an idea creates the opportunity to generate something new and exciting. I have found that it also greatly enhances your learning experience as you personally work through the concept and make it your own.

    If you do use someone else's material, make sure that you give credit were credit is due and respect the owner's rights. Assuming what the owner is fine with what you doing is never a good idea. Simply asking permission is an excellent way to avoid many problems. People are usually pretty reasonable and willing to work with you. Try it out. You may actually find yourself pleasantly surprised.
